You may see sea turtles and whale sightings if you are lucky - A 15-minute drive to the Pahoa shopping center and grocery, and 30 minutes to Hilo which has more shopping and many spots for swimming or surfing. The lifestyle: Staying at our cabin is a country lifestyle with a closer connection to nature. Our water comes from a rain catchment which makes for great showers. We have a 3-stage filter system that makes the water safe for drinking. We also drop our garbage off at a transfer station once a week. We are on the wet side of the island where it rains more, but our property is located in an area called the sun belt that gets less rain thanks to tradewinds from the ocean. Sometimes we come back from town in the rain and arrive on our road to find it's dry. The rain comes and goes and keeps all the plant life lush in our area. The island: The island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island, has several climate zones and it's easy to drive to many of them in 2 hours. From our cabin, here are some of the sites we like to visit: Neighborhood walks to the ocean where you can see sea turtles and, if lucky, dolphins and whales! Pahoa town: 15 min drive to a town with a mix of a new shopping plaza and old-Hawaii feel to it Volcano National Park: 45 min Kehena Black Sands Beach: 30 min Shipman beach trail: 10 min Hilo: 30 min Tin shack bakery: 17 min Waipio Valley: 1hr 30 min Mauna Kea State Park: 1hr Kona & Captain Cook: 2 hrs Getting here: There are two airports, Hilo and Kona. Often we fly to Kona for the price and enjoy the drive across the island with beautiful views of the mountain and ocean. Mahalo!
